WELLBEING STRATEGY ENHANCED AT ROKE MANOR RESEARCH

09/03/2007

With employee wellbeing at the forefront of its corporate policy, Roke Manor Research is currently undergoing a review and augmentation of its ‘Wellbeing Strategy’.

The company opened a new Life Fitness equipped gym as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations in May last year. To date, 35% of its employees have signed up to the gym and all staff enjoy a selection of benefits to boost their health and wellbeing.

Setting high standards as a responsible employer, Roke Manor Research actively promotes the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, encourages relaxation and minimises stress levels among its staff.

Janine Dann, Treasurer of the Sports and Social Club Committee, explains: “Employee wellbeing is a primary concern and we are continually enhancing our strategy in this regard. We provide a number of initiatives and opportunities to help our staff reduce stress and stay healthy, including the option of working flexi-time; access to a company doctor and counsellor; complimentary water and hot drinks available throughout the site; option of having a medical.”

The launch of the 100 sq m gym facility is yet another example of Roke Manor’s progressive approach to staff health and wellbeing. It was a gift to the 425 employees after a thorough consultation and voting process decided what they would like to do to mark the company’s 50th anniversary. The facility was officially opened by Olympic medallist, Iwan Thomas, on May 17, 2006, as part of a series of events during the month to commemorate the company reaching its half century.

Part of Siemens, Roke is the organisation’s only research and development site in the UK. The gym is attached to the Sports and Social club pavilion, which offers a broad spectrum of activities, located within the 22 acre estate near Romsey in Hampshire. It features 27 pieces of equipment from Life Fitness including Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) cardiovascular machines, strength products from the Pro2SE range and free weights. The gym is open 24 hours a day 364 days a year. Members pay a minimal monthly contribution to cover running costs and maintenance.

Janine Dann, Treasurer of the Sports and Social Club Committee, said: “We chose to work with Life Fitness because they offered a high quality product and excellent value for money. We also felt that they had a good understanding of what we were looking for and wanted to achieve with the gym.”

Janine continues: “We took Life Fitness’ advice as to what equipment to choose based on the profile of our employees and level of usage, as well as the space and budget available. The equipment is durable and robust and feedback from our growing membership base continues to be very positive.”
